[From the Founder] Why we started JOTx, what we’ve learned, and how we’re moving forward

I started an outpatient speech therapy practice on a little island near Seattle in 2010.  Right away I started looking for documentation solutions.  About the same time I started looking at apps for data collection during my sessions and I thought, wouldn’t it be great if the data from your app could just go straight into your treatment note?  That would save a ton of time and stress.

So we put together a product that integrates data collections tools with an actual daily note platform.  It’s encrypted for security.  All the third party payer requirements are included in the daily note that it creates. And that includes tracking the treatment code and reporting the time spent in the session on each code provided.  We tried to include comprehensive treatment exercises for every area that a speech therapist might work on.  Our goal was to write nice exercise descriptions with data autopopulating the note.  Something that wasn’t the gobbledygook found in so many EHR picklists. Something intelligent and meaningful to the speech therapists who actually have to read those notes later to figure out what to do next.

As it turned out,  that’s a lot of code to write.  It was full of non intelligent exercise descriptions.  So we spent a long time cleaning up the exercise descriptions and instructions to make it more user friendly.  That’s version 1.5, which we just had approved for the apple store on  August 5, 2013.   We also discovered that our users wanted more features.  Here’s a few of the main ones:

  • More affordable pricing with solutions for solo therapists, students, midsize groups, and large groups
  • Multiple goal tracking
  • Group data tracking
  • Caseload sharing capabilities
  • Offline functionality
  • The ability to generate a progress summary with graphs
  • Access to notes via website for editing and backup purposes.
  • Goal Bank
  • The ability for an SLP to upload their own logo.

We are currently working on version 2.0 which will include multiple goal tracking, group data tracking, caseload sharing, and offline functioning. It is anticipated that beta testing for version 2 will begin early November, and we are looking forward to hearing your thoughts about it.

If all the features that you are hoping for aren’t there right away, please be patient. It takes time to develop something fabulous for everyone.

Please let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
